Let’s build smart to meet the housing requirements and minimize community impact.
The California Housing Element requires Sausalito to build an 724 new residential units. Many sites that scored highly last year in Sausalito’s ranking system have been changed or removed, pushing a majority of the new housing units to northern Sausalito. We ask for a more thoughtful and objective distribution of houses throughout Sausalito.
Diversity in density
Sausalito’s northern tip above Mollie Stone’s already has a high concentration of affordable housing, and now the city plans to add 2.3 times more units to this area compared to mid and south Sausalito. Building smart requires a more balanced approach, spreading affordable housing across all neighborhoods to ensure equal sharing of benefits and responsibilities.
Protect community spaces
The housing plan for MLK park allows for up to 50 units. This would remove public parking and dominate the park landscape and facilities. New public parking and would need to be planned and built, converting more of the park into parking lot. Building smart maintains access to public spaces for all to enjoy.

Safety First
MLK Park is in a high fire danger area. Two developments near the park were evacuated in 2018 and 2022 with just a few moments notice. During rush hour, northbound Bridgeway backs up, often blocking evacuation routes. Adding 90 units to this area would increase traffic congestion, potentially trapping residents and emergency vehicles during a fire Building smart means prioritizing the safety and security of all Sausalito residents by ensuring that new developments are located in safe areas.
