Building Smart for Long-Term Sustainability

Sausalito’s infrastructure is already under significant strain, and adding 50 new housing units in MLK Park could exacerbate these issues. At BuildSmartSausalito.org, we believe in planning for sustainable development that protects and enhances our city’s infrastructure.

Sewer System Overload
The sewer line from the proposed site is gravity fed, but goes uphill and often clogs. Additional loads could lead to costly upgrades, similar to the recent $6 million pump station installation on Coloma Street.

Liquefaction Risk
MLK Park is built on mud and backfill, making it impractical for high density housing and increasing the risk of liquefaction during earthquakes. (green lines are areas of high liquefaction risk)

High Fire Danger
The MLK site is in a designated high fire danger area with limited options for safe evacuation as the 2023 fire and evacuation demonstrated. Building in such high-risk areas without thorough planning for fire safety and evacuation routes puts lives at risk.

Environmental Impact:
Removing trees and altering the park’s landscape to accommodate new buildings would affect the park’s natural beauty and ecological balance. Smart building includes preserving green spaces, protecting natural habitats, and minimizing environmental disruption.

Take Action Now

Talk to your friends, neighbors, and local organizations. The more voices we have, the more effective we can be in advocating for a balanced housing plan.

Together, we can ensure that Sausalito’s development is smart, sustainable, and serves the needs of all residents. Let’s limit development in MLK Park and build a better future for our community!
