Submittal for Marina Plaza Development

We’re excited to share and review a recent proposal submitted by one of our Build Smart Sausalito members—a detailed overlay of a potential development at Marina Plaza. This proposal stands out for its thoughtful integration into the existing waterfront, offering a balanced solution that not only meets housing needs but also enhances the community’s character and functionality.

Why We Like It

One of the most compelling aspects of this proposal is how seamlessly it blends with the current waterfront landscape. Rather than imposing a drastic change, it feels like a natural extension of the area, honoring Sausalito’s maritime heritage while addressing critical housing needs. By replacing an underused office building with affordable housing, the plan breathes new life into a neglected space and provides a fresh opportunity for both residents and local businesses.

Space for Artists and Mixed Use

Another standout feature is the inclusion of spaces dedicated to artists, which aligns perfectly with Sausalito’s rich history as an artistic hub. The proposal also smartly incorporates mixed-use space in the back of the development, allowing for light manufacturing and artist workspaces. This integration ensures that the creative community continues to thrive, while also making room for small businesses and workshops, fostering a sense of collaboration and innovation.

A Balanced Approach

This submission reflects exactly the type of forward-thinking, balanced approach we champion at Build Smart Sausalito. It addresses affordable housing needs, incorporates spaces for the arts, and promotes smart growth—all while preserving the spirit of Sausalito’s unique waterfront.

Encouraging More Ideas

We encourage other community members to submit their own ideas for potential development locations. For example, the abandoned Spencer Street firehouse presents a prime opportunity for a creative housing project, or perhaps there are other underutilized spaces around Sausalito waiting for a fresh perspective. Your vision could help shape the future of our town!

If you have ideas, please share them with us at friends@buildsmartsausalito.org—we’re always looking for thoughtful, community-driven solutions.

Thank you to our member for this inspiring submittal!

Post script. A few members have asked about the possibility of building on the right side of the image. Many plans have been submitted in the past for that site, maintaining the working waterfront elements and removing the storage containers to build mixed use space. We plan to share some notes from those submittals to better understand the complexity and opportunities there.
